BEFORE ARRIVAL
Currency: Singapore uses the Singapore Dollar (SGD). Familiarize yourself with the currency, and consider getting some local currency for small expenses. It is always a good idea to have some cash available as many places do not take foreign credit cards (e.g. hawker centres)
Visa & Entry Requirements: Check if you need a visa to enter Singapore. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months upon arrival. Within two days before the arrival, you will have to fill out the SG Arrival Card form (you can also do it on site when landing)
Weather: November in Singapore is warm and humid with occasional rain. Pack light, breathable clothing, an umbrella, and a reusable water bottle
For commuting with taxis: download the transportation app "Grab" (similar to Uber), beware: you may need a Singaporean phone number first. Alternatives which do not require this are TADA, ComfortDelgro, Gojek…
Accommodation: Ensure your accommodation is booked and that you have a copy of the confirmation.
Consider buying a Singaporean power plug adaptor for your technical devices.
UPON ARRIVAL
Connectivity: Changi airport offers free WiFi. Consider purchasing a local SIM card (e.g., at Changi Airport) for data and local calls. We can assist you here. A good option is to go for tourist plans of M1.
Customs Declaration: Singapore has strict laws on the import of certain goods, such as chewing gum. Check customs guidelines to avoid fines.
Transport: Use reputable taxis, Grab or the local subway (called MRT) to reach your accommodation. Note: Taxis in Singapore are safe and use meters. The most convenient option upon arrival with your luggage will be either a taxi, Grab or other apps such as TADA, ComfortDelgro or Gojek (prices can vary from one app to another based on the hours you use them).
DURING THE CONFERENCE / ABOUT SINGAPORE
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially when moving between air-conditioned venues and the humid outdoors.
Air-conditioned areas can be quite cold, make sure you have something to cover yourself with in case you are sensitive to cold.
Local Transportation: Familiarize yourself with the MRT system – it's efficient and often the fastest way to get around. Buses are also reliable.
Google Maps is reliable for both buses and MRT. Bus timings are more infrequent, so it's important to check on an app before. MRT timings are every few minutes, so it's not necessary to check train timings beforehand. Both buses and MRT can be paid with "tap to pay" with your usual debit/credit card. Buses can also take exact cash. For the bus, you should always enter by the door in the front, and exit in the back (tap with your card at the entrance and at the exit).
Dining: Try local delicacies like Hainanese chicken rice, laksa, and chili crab. Hawker centres offer affordable and delicious food options.
Culture & Etiquette: Be punctual for appointments. Remove shoes when entering someone’s home. Queue in an orderly manner, especially at public transport stations.
Safety: Singapore is one of the safest cities. However, always exercise general caution and keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas.
We advise that you also take with you some mosquito repellent in case you intend to go to natural reserves. The conference venue should however be pretty clean of any mosquitoes.

POST-CONFERENCE & DEPARTURE
Local Attractions: If time allows, visit attractions like Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, and Sentosa Island.
Shopping: Popular shopping locations include Orchard Road and Chinatown.
Departure: Allow plenty of time to reach Changi Airport, particularly during peak hours. Explore the airport – it's one of the best in the world with many attractions.
Tax Refunds: Eligible tourists can claim a Goods and Services Tax (GST) refund at the airport for purchases made in Singapore (make sure to ask directly to the retailer a detax form, you will need to have your passport with you for this procedure).
